Lifting Eyes on Metal beams in a lift shaft

Lift Shaft Lifting Eye Installation & Testing

Every lift shaft presents unique engineering challenges. The method of lift shaft lifting eye installation must adapt to the building structure to ensure total load-bearing integrity.

The Foundation of a Safe Lift Shaft

In lift modernisation, safety depends entirely on your anchor points. Standard fixings are rarely engineered for the high dynamic stresses of a professional lift shaft lifting eye installation. Whether you are performing a new installation or a motor repair, a certified lifting point is a critical safety requirement.

At Industrial Lifting Ltd, we provide more than just hardware. We offer a complete “supply, install, and test” solution tailored to your specific site.

We follow industry best practice to ensure your lifting environment is fully documented and site-ready. Our service provides the structural integrity your engineers need to work with total confidence.

Installation Methods: Adapting to the Structure

Every lift shaft presents unique engineering challenges. The method of lift shaft lifting eye installation must adapt to the building structure to ensure total load-bearing integrity. We provide three primary installation routes to suit your specific site requirements:

  • Post-Fix Installation: This is the standard for modernisation projects in existing buildings. We use precision drilling and high performance mechanical anchors into the concrete slab to create a permanent, high-capacity anchor.
  • Cast-In Sockets: For newer builds, we expertly fit eyes into sockets that were integrated into the slab during the initial concrete pour.
  • Structural Beam Attachment: Often, the most secure anchor is the building’s own steelwork. We install heavy-duty lifting points directly onto existing structural beams or bespoke lifting beams for reliable vertical pulls.

We supply and install for every application required. This ensures your gear is perfectly matched to the beam dimensions and load requirements of the project.

Technical Verification: Hydrajaws or Load Cell Testing

Verification is the most critical stage of any lift shaft lifting eye installation. We do not use a “one size fits all” approach to safety. Instead, we select the most effective testing method based on the installation type and the building’s structure.

Our engineers utilise one of two primary verification methods:

  • Hydrajaw Pull-Testing: We use a Hydrajaw tester to confirm the immediate integrity and “grip” of a fixing within the concrete. This is ideal for smaller spaces or lift shafts with scaffolding making it hard to reach the pit of shaft wall to attach the load cell and lever hoist but still ensuring the lifting eyes meet their required SWL.
  • Load Cell Verification: For a data-driven proof test, we apply the required Safe Working Load (SWL) using a lever hoist and a digital load cell. This method provides a precise measurement of the eye’s performance under its rated capacity.

We use either the Hydrajaw or the Load Cell depending on the specific application. This strategic selection ensures we provide a definitive, professional test result for every anchor point.

Compliance: The Legal Safety File

Documentation is as critical as the installation itself. Every lift shaft lifting eye installation must be backed by a Report of Thorough Examination before it is put into service. This process ensures your equipment meets the rigorous standards set by LOLER (Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998), providing legal proof that the gear is fit for purpose.

In the lift industry, safety standards are exceptionally high, because these eyes are frequently used for Man-riding applications, they require a thorough examination and test every 6 months. This doubled frequency ensures maximum protection for teams working within the shaft.

To maintain a watertight safety file, we provide:

  • Clear Traceability: Each eye is labelled with a unique ID and its certified Safe Working Load (SWL) for easy on-site identification.
  • Contractor Support: We offer an independent “test and certify” service. If your team has already performed an installation, we can go back to site to test and certify the work.

FAQ: Lift Shaft Lifting Eye Installation & Testing

Can you test lifting eyes installed by our own team?

Yes. We frequently supply equipment for others to install and then go back to the site to perform the Thorough Examination and provide certification.

We select the best-fit method for the specific installation. A Hydrajaw is typically used in more confined spaces where there isn’t the room to set up the load cell and lever hoist, while a Load Cell provides a data-driven proof test of the rated Safe Working Load (SWL).

Because these eyes are used for Man-riding applications, they must undergo a thorough examination and test every 6 months to remain compliant with safety standards.

We offer versatile installation options, including post fixing into concrete slabs, fitting into cast-in sockets, or securing heavy-duty points to existing structural steel beams or bespoke lifting beams.

Upon successful completion, we issue a Report of Thorough Examination, ensuring your safety file is watertight and ready for site audits.
